Stunning Sunsets and Unfathomable Food
It’s no secret that Bali is a top travel destination for anyone craving beautiful beaches, breathtaking rice paddy views, serene meditation retreats and good vibes all round.
Visiting Bali feels like coming home to a long-lost family, and recently I was fortunate enough to spend an entire month soaking up the charm of Canggu, a beach-town rising in popularity for its laid-back surfer vibe, amazing food and stunning sunsets.
As a freelance writer, I’m lucky enough to be able to dip my toes into the “digital nomad” lifestyle when I like, and that meant I got to take my laptop with me to Bali and experience the best Canggu had to offer while still working.
You could really be on any budget and still have an epic time in Canggu. The food is cheap, most places are within walking distance (although scooter rentals are very affordable), and there are accommodation options for backpackers right through to luxury holiday-makers.
Read on to discover some of the best things to do in Canggu when you visit!
Hit the Surf
There’s surfing for everybody in Canggu, whether you’ve never laid hands on a surfboard, or have been catching waves for years.
Batu Bolong Beach is literally lined with surf shops where you can rent a board or have a lesson for an hour or two. The friendly surf instructors are often locals who have grown up reading waves since they were kids.
If you’re an experienced surfer, head to Echo Beach — or just go there to watch the experts riding insane waves!
Take a Yoga Class
Yoga is synonymous with Bali — you really don’t have to look very far to find a quality yoga class taught by a talented teacher.
Make sure you check out the classes at Serenity Eco Guesthouse, which has a full schedule of classes all day long, including the chance to try some fun new things like aerial yoga. Head to their raw vegan cafe, Alkaline, afterward to try one of their amazing vegan cakes!

Foodie Tour
The food in Canggu is unparalleled. From local nasi campur (rice with side dishes) to epic brunches, vegan burgers and even an all-avocado restaurant, there’s literally something for everyone — and always at great prices.
My top recommendations would be:
- The Shady Shack: for vegetarian and vegan feasting
- The Loft: for a great ambiance and delicious food
- Motion Cafe: for health-focused dining
- La Baracca: delicious pizza (with vegan options!)
- Peleton Supershop: for beautiful decor and vegan food heaven
- Cafe Vida: beautiful setting and great options for everyone
Honestly, though, I never had a bad meal in Canggu. Make sure you head into one of the busier local warungs to try nasi campur, nasi goreng or mie goreng!
Have a Spa Day
There aren’t many places in the world where you can get a fantastic massage for less than $20, but Canggu is one of them.
There are multiple spas offering luxury treatments including facials, Balinese massages, body scrubs, manicures and pedicures at great prices!
If you’re in the area for a while, I highly recommend checking out Amo Spa to enjoy the sauna, ice plunge pool, and Jacuzzi with a stunning view of a rice paddy field while you’re relaxing.
Go to the Markets
Weekend markets are a big thing in Canggu, and a great time to find some cute souvenirs to take home for your friends and family (or, you know, yourself!).
Make sure you check out the organic market at La Laguna for lots of foodie treats and eco-friendly produce, and the Sunday market at Samadi Yoga Studio.
With the Bali Twice the Magic package you'll be able to experience 2 Four Seasons resorts, getting a taste for different landscapes in Bali.
Sunbathe on the Beach
While the sea may be more suited to surfing than swimming, the beaches around Canggu are still perfect for doing some sunbathing and enjoying Bali’s beautiful weather.
A lot of the bars with sunbeds or bean bags will even give you a welcome drink when you pay the small fee for using a sunbed all day!
Go Shopping
Canggu is home to some beautiful shops, giving you the perfect excuse to go on a shopping spree.
Make sure you check out Love Anchor market for jewelry, vintage clothes and other handmade goods from locals.
Have a Pool Party at La Brisa
La Brisa is the perfect spot to head to if you want to get a few truly Instagram-worthy shots. We’re talking cool, fringed white parasols, an infinity pool right next to the beach, lush green grass, and giant bean bags to enjoy a cocktail on and watch the world go by.
Head here during the day and indulge your inner Instagram influencer, if only for a couple of hours!
This Cheese Journeys tour in England will give you the chance to meet world-famous cheesemakers with a stay in a charming English manor house.
Sundowners at Old Man’s
Old Man’s is almost a right of passage in Canggu. The beachfront bar has a casual, friendly atmosphere, and looks right over the surf break, making it the perfect place to come to relax after a day in the sun.
It’s one of the biggest bars right on the beach, and is the place to go if you’re looking for a party while you’re in Canggu.
Watch the Sunset
The sunset in Canggu is really special, and an experience everyone needs to see at least once.
Head down to SandBar on the beach for live music, comfortable bean bag chairs and a cold beer while enjoying one of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see.
Overall, Canggu is a really special place that promises opportunities to have a fantastic holiday, no matter what your budget is or why you’re visiting.
I know it won’t be long before I’m back in the throng of it, so hit me up next time you go — maybe I’ll see you for a beer at Old Man’s!
