Spend Your Anniversary Delighting in One of These Destinations
Savannah, Georgia
If popular films were your only guide, you could be excused for thinking that the American South was a blighted backwater. A visit to Savannah, Georgia, though, would soon cure you of that notion.
With historical panache to spare and tons of places to dine or unwind, it’s a wonderful place to travel to for couples celebrating 15-year anniversaries.
Strolling through the historic public squares that stipple Savannah’s oak-shrouded downtown streets could comprise a major portion of any trip. There are plenty of things to do in Savannah, so when fatigue inevitably threatens, hop on any of the readily available horse-drawn carriages for a guided tour.
Make sure to swing by 30-acre Forsyth Park and Bonaventure Cemetery (both of which featured prominently in the Clint Eastwood-directed film “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”). Also, check out Independent Presbyterian Church to see where the opening scene of “Forrest Gump” was shot, kick back on a riverboat cruise, visit author Flannery O’Connor’s home, and enjoy a gourmet meal in the nearly 250-year-old building dubbed The Olde Pink House.
If you're looking to be immersed in the rich culture of the capital of Panama, these things to do in Panama City will provide an unparalleled experience.
Lake Como, Italy
Visitors to Italy’s Lake Como can be excused for thinking they magically landed in “The Sound of Music.” Towering, snow-capped mountains. Verdant forests. Sapphire water. Snuggled up right next to the Swiss border, this corner of the bel paese personifies laid-back luxury and has become a favorite getaway spot for celebrities such as George Clooney and Chrissy Teigen.
The lake itself is dotted with tiny hamlets, each offering its own charms. Walk a Roman-era stone ridge near Torno, climb the Volta lighthouse for a spectacular view and golf in Menaggio.
Or you could start with the city of Como itself and take its funicular up into the mountains for an alpine stroll. Various clubs will let you rent a boat or even charter seaplanes for scenic jaunts.
Then there’s horse-riding, museums, bike trails and water skiing.
Don’t forget, though, that Lake Como also has a sedate side that every lover can adore. Wandering ancient hamlets while you sample gelato and local wine is hard to beat no matter which anniversary you may be celebrating.
