With the rising cost of travel, accommodation and entertainment, many jet-setters are beginning to look beyond holiday hot spots when planning their next vacation. But budget vacations often come with hidden prices, one of which is safety.

Though many countries offer affordable vacations at deeply discounted prices, such countries are frequently steeped in economic, political and religious turmoil. Read on to learn about some of the most dangerous places to travel, and why you should approach with caution.

1. Sudan

Officially named the Republic of Sudan, Sudan is an African country bordered by Egypt and divided by the River Nile. It is a country steeped in culture and tradition, and the people of Sudan are warm and welcoming to tourists.

However, over the course of several decades Sudan’s tourism industry has suffered as a result of the civil warfare between its people. Consequently, many governments warn travelers to give Sudan a wide berth when planning their next vacation.

2. Mexico

A holiday favorite for many travelers for its beautiful beaches, cuisine, and resorts, Mexico is nevertheless one of the most treacherous vacation spots for travelers. With rising drug cartels and gang violence Mexico is becoming increasingly dangerous for locals and tourists alike.

3. Papua New Guinea

An Oceanian country, Papua New Guinea is a stunning country boasting wondrous landscapes and beaches. However, Papua New Guinea is quickly becoming known as one of the world’s most dangerous places, particularly for women and children.

Crime rates are high, especially in the country’s cities, while remote locations are often made difficult to access as a result of criminal roadblocks and looting.

4. Democratic Republic of Congo

Located in Central Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo is surrounded by countries rife with civil strife. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of Congo is also one of the world’s largest francophone countries.

Rich in natural resources such as soil, water, and minerals, Congo is nevertheless plagued by political instability and corruption with many of the locals living in fear.

5. Russia

Within the West, Russia is once again becoming a notorious country under Putin’s control. Although many tourists pass through Russia with no problems to speak of, the country is becoming increasingly dangerous within the political arena.

Political rallies are common within the country, while Moscow in particular is often subject to terrorism and terrorist threats.

6. Somalia

Bordered by Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya, Somalia is a country in turmoil. Currently listed as a war zone, Somalia is incredibly dangerous for tourists as a result of armed conflict throughout the country.

Somalia’s official government wields very little power, with the majority of the country under the control of warlords and pirates alike.

7. Ukraine

A beautiful country, Ukraine is nevertheless becoming quickly destabilized as a result of its ongoing dispute with Russia. While the feud exists primarily between Ukraine’s armed forces and Russian separatists is it common for civilians to become involved in the fighting.

With some Western countries closing their consulates in parts of Ukraine it is becoming increasingly important that tourists remain vigilant should they decide to visit.

8. Colombia

Although Colombia has a notorious reputation as being one of South America’s most dangerous countries, tourists will find locals to be friendly and welcoming. Nevertheless, Colombia has earned its spot on our list for its ever-present drug and organized crime.

However, such crime is most common along Colombia’s borders (particularly Brazil and Venezuela) with many areas of the country remaining safe for visitors.

9. Egypt

Known for its famous pyramids and ancient culture, Egypt today remains under a high threat of terrorism. Bordered by the Gaza Strip, Israel, Libya, and Sudan the country is located within the world’s most dangerous political region.

Although many of Egypt’s protests take place under peaceful pretenses, such demonstrations can often change quickly with police and demonstrators alike relying on live ammunition for control.

10. India

Culturally rich and physically stunning, India is nevertheless a treacherous vacation spot, particularly for women traveling alone. While there is less robbery and drug crime than other countries, India’s perils to travelers are as a result of their hazardous traffic, unsanitary living conditions and food safety.

Take caution when eating locally prepared food and don’t forget medicine for food poisoning, should you need it!
