6 Off the Grid Vacations Where You Can Truly Get Away from It All

A Whitewater Rafting Adventure

If you want to bring along the kids, you may think your options are limited, but there are a surprising number of whitewater rafting trips geared for the whole family that provide the ideal way to unplug from the electronics and reconnect with life. Little ones as young as 4 years old are welcome on the three-day Lower Klamath River trip offered by OARS.

The Klamath River is situated in the remote northwestern corner of California and provides fun, bouncy rapids that are an ideal introduction to whitewater. Plus, the water is relatively warm, making it fun for other activities like swimming too. The trip includes easy hikes, blackberry picking and even the opportunity to gold pan.

Of course, there are plenty of rafting adventures to be had all over the country — and the world. Whitewater rafting in Colorado, for example, is incredibly popular due to the plethora of rivers and beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Just 32 guests can stay at any one time, and there are no televisions or telephones. It’s one of the best ways to get away from it all in the United States.

Instead, you’ll find seven miles of unspoiled sands with pretty seashells strewn about, and the opportunity to enjoy swimming in the gentle surf, fishing or watching all the birds, which include bald eagles and some 280 other species.
